Every year, I try to help my nieces and nephews with school supplies. I have 14 nieces and nephews across the country.
I never really noticed exactly how much I actually spent on school supplies for other people’s kids. This year I decided to make a conscious effort to keep track.
I started my journey at Walmart and bought a bunch of random school supplies that I thought most of the kids could use.
All of that only cost $100. After I purchased those school supplies, I asked my sister (I'll refer to her as family 1) to send my nieces' school supply lists. I wanted to see if I had anything on their lists. I didn't have much. So, I decided to head back to the store and get some of the items they needed. I ended up spending $65 more bucks. I said to myself that I should have just asked family 1 for their lists before I went shopping the first time.
Let me just pause here for a minute. I absolutely hate going shopping for school supplies. I hate it so much that I literally walked out of Walmart and left the basket of items that I had in the freaking store the first time I went. It was just too many people, the supplies were not organized, the isles were way too small, and people are inconsiderate. I just hate it! Why I went back to the store for more school supplies beats me.
Then, there is family 2. Family 2 lives far away from me. I send them a few hundred dollars every year to help out.
Family 3 consists of my handsome nephews who live in Alabama. My oldest nephew graduated high school this year. As a graduation gift, I bought him a laptop for college. The middle nephew is currently in high school. He just wanted $200 for clothes. They don't wear uniforms.
Family 4 lives around the corner from my parents. They received the majority of the school supplies from the first haul.
I was also able to get all of my soon-to-be sister-in-law's school supplies from my first school supply haul.
That brings my grand total to close to $1,100.
I'm pretty sure that I didn't put a dent into what it takes to properly supply a child for a new school year, but I sure as hell put a dent in my wallet!

ReplyDeleteWhich family am I? Because we didn’t receive anything.
They are across the country. You clearly didn’t make the list.
